Project
Under the auspices of GMSTEC, Victoria University of Wellington (VUW) and the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) worked collaboratively on a capacity building programme on the teaching of English for Specific Purposes. The project “Building Language Teaching Capacity at the Royal University of Phnom Penh” was jointly supported by the Asia New Zealand Foundation of New Zealand and Victoria University of Wellington. The purpose of the project was to enhance the capacity of the Royal University of Phnom Penh to teach English language and to support English language medium learning by: (i) building curriculum development skills among staff at RUPP; (ii) developing curricula for English for Specific Purpose (ESP) programmes; (iii) fostering relevant and effective teaching practices at RUPP and, (iv) developing teaching resources with an emphasis on specific-purpose English language programmes. It was expected that the exchange would: (i) enhance capacity at the English department at RUPP to develop and evaluate curricula that meet specific academic and vocational requirements; (ii) develop a professional framework within which effective and informed support for other academic staff in delivering programmes in the medium of English can be provided at RUPP; (iii) enhance knowledge and practice of methodology for teaching English for specific purposes at RUPP; and, (iv) improve the quality and relevance of teaching materials available on RUPP’s English language programmes.
The project consisted of training workshops, class observations, and curriculum assessment carried out in New Zealand and Cambodia. Exchange visits provided good opportunities for developing mutual understanding of the teaching of English language at each institution, particularly English for Specific Purposes (ESP). Knowledge and practice of methodology for teaching English for specific purposes amongst a group of teaching staff at RUPP has been improved and the quality and relevance of teaching materials available on RUPP’s English language programmes have been upgraded through improvements to existing courses and the addition of a new course “English for Science and Technology”.
