The University of Economics - Ho Chi Minh City, a multidisciplinary university in economic sciences, was established by the Vietnamese Government in October 1976. In the process of establishment and development, the University has undergone several organisational changes and 26 years on it is now the national key economics university in the South of Vietnam.
The University of Economics is a scientific center for:
Training and retraining managers, policy makers, economic and management
experts at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels (M.A and Ph.D) with
increasing numbers of students.
Conducting economic and management research in support of training, policy making, industrial development and strategic planning at both national and local level.
Consulting on technology transfer, economic management and business administration.
As of 2001, the University has a staff of over 700, including more that 500 faculty members, 45,000 undergraduate students, about 1,300 postgraduate students, of which 200 are Ph.D candidates.

Scientific Research Activities
The scientific research activities of teaching staff and students aim at the following objectives:
1 Improve training curriculum, content and teaching methodology;
2 Compile learning and teaching materials and references;
3 Improve professional knowledge and research capacity;
4 Contribute to enterprises' production and management reform.
