As a time-honored institution of higher learning, Yunnan University is soon to celebrate its 80th Anniversary of Foundation. Founded by Tang Jiyao in 1922, then Governor of Yunnan Province, Yunnan University began to enroll students in 1923.

In the past years Yunnan University strove to enlarge its academic calibre so that by now it has incorporated the humanities, law, science, business, administration, engineering and arts into its disciplinary coverage. The latest estimation indicates that there are approximately 32,658 students studying at Yunnan University. This vast student population is composed of 16,574 associate diploma and bachelor's degree candidates, 1,592 postgraduates and 14,492 adult education students.

Yunnan University has 643 full professors and associate professors, 331 lecturers. Twenty two schools and two institutes, three general education divisions comprise of the university proper, which are respectively the School of Economics, the School of the Humanities, the School of Law, the School of Public Administration, the School of Business and Tourism Administration, the School of Foreign Languages, the School of Life Science, the School of Informatics, the School of Software Science, the School of Vocational–Technical Education, the School of Mathematics and Science, the School of Modern International Design Art, the School of Pharmacology, the School of International Cultures, the School of Arts, the School of Dianchi, the School of Adult Education, School of International Relations, School of Network Education, School of Resource Environment and Earth Science, School of Chemistry and Material Engineering, School of Tourist Culture at Lijiang. The above-listed schools offer 68 undergraduate majors, two national-level key disciplines and 15 provincial-level key disciplines.
